ASAWASI SDA CHURCH REACHES OUT TO THE AGED WITH LOVE AND CARE
The Asawasi Seventh-day Adventist Church, under the Ashanti Central Ghana Conference, extended a heartwarming gesture of love and compassion to the elderly through a special program dubbed “Care for the Elderly.” The event, held at the church premises in Asawasi within the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly of Greater Kumasi, brought together aged members who, due to ill health and advanced age, are often unable to attend regular worship services.
The initiative sought not only to reunite the elderly with their church family but also to celebrate their invaluable contributions to the growth of the church and community over the years. The day’s program featured worship, fellowship, and a communal meal, creating an atmosphere of joy and gratitude.
During the divine service, Elder Nicholas Ofori, one of the church leaders, delivered a touching sermon titled “End It Now.” He urged the congregation to show greater compassion and appreciation to the elderly, reminding members that many of them had laid the foundation of the church through their sacrifices, but now face the limitations of age and ill health.
In an interview with Hope Adventist News, Mrs. Helena Dickens, Women’s Ministries Leader of the Asawasi SDA Church, explained that the program was designed to bridge the gap between the elderly and the church’s younger generation. “This initiative is to remind us that our aged mothers and fathers are treasures who deserve our love, support, and fellowship, even when they can no longer be active in church life,” she said.
The event also featured testimonies from some of the elderly. Maame Kyei, a 93-year-old pioneer member of the church, expressed deep gratitude to the church leadership and organizers. In an emotional reflection, she recounted how she and other early believers helped establish the church in Asawasi, but now due to frailty and ill health, they are unable to attend regularly. “This program has brought me great joy. I feel remembered and cherished,” she shared with tears of appreciation.
The celebration ended with fellowship and a shared meal between the elderly and the younger members, symbolizing unity and the continuity of faith across generations.
The Asawasi SDA Church hopes to make “Care for the Elderly” an annual event to ensure that the elderly remain connected, honored, and supported within the church family.
